Who We Are

In 2010, the team identified a need for a high-quality rental and leasing option for refrigerated transport customers. Sonsray Rental & Leasing was founded, giving rise to the Sonsray brand. Inspired by the yin and yang symbol, Hoelscher designed the Sonsray logo to reflect balance, a key to success in all things. The name “Sonsray” is a tribute to Hoelscher’s children: “Sons” for his sons and “ray” for his daughter.

In 2012, Hoelscher dramatically expanded the business to include the construction equipment industry. Sonsray Machinery grew to serve customers along the West Coast, from Washington to Arizona. By 2014, Sonsray Inc. was established to unify all divisions under one corporate entity. Sonsray Rentals joined the family in 2019 to better serve customers with machinery rental solutions.

In 2021, Sonsray Machinery expanded into agriculture through a partnership with CASE IH, a global leader with over 175 years of industry expertise. Sonsray acquired Booth Machinery, a Case IH agriculture equipment dealership with locations in Bakersfield, Five Points, Fresno, Salinas (California), and Yuma (Arizona), establishing a strong presence in the agriculture sector. Additionally, Sonsray Fleet Services made significant expansions to the East Coast by acquiring Thermo King of Long Island (Farmingdale, NY) and Thermo King of Carlstadt (NJ), solidifying its transport refrigeration operations in the region.

In 2023, Sonsray Fleet Services continued its Northeast expansion with the acquisition of Thermo King Southern Connecticut. This growth further enhanced its presence and service capabilities in the region.

In December 2024, Sonsray announced the acquisition of Goodman AG Group, an agricultural equipment dealer operating in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. This acquisition significantly bolstered Sonsray’s footprint in the Southwest and strengthened its position in the agricultural sector.

In January 2025, Sonsray added the Hitachi product line to its offerings, expanding operations to the Pacific Northwest (Washington and Oregon) and Southern California, including locations in Auburn, Marysville, Salem, Portland, El Cajon, Fontana, and Santa Fe Springs.

Today, Sonsray continues its growth trajectory with over 40 locations, serving as one of North America’s largest distributors of Thermo King, Kubota, Hitachi, CASE Construction Equipment, and CASE IH. Sonsray remains committed to delivering the equipment and service America needs to get the job done.

Matthew Hoelscher

Founder & CEO

Matthew Hoelscher is the Founder and CEO of Sonsray. He was raised on a farm surrounded by heavy machinery all his life. After his wife pushed him to go to college he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. After college he obtained a job in sales within the transportation industry. Matthew always seems to have the vision to think big.

By 2009, Matthew noticed an opportunity in refrigerated trailer rentals. After years of customers asking for referrals, Matthew decided to start his own company in refrigerated trailer rentals. He founded SONSRAY. A name inspired by his children, 3 SONS and his daughter’s name, Rayne (RAY). By 2010, Sonsray Rentals & Leasing trailers were on the road with 10 established locations. With his expertise in the transportation industry, each location continues to support customers with their transport refrigeration and trailer equipment needs through their sister-company, Sonsray Fleet Services.

In 2012, as Matthew was looking for new investment ideas, he stumbled upon the opportunity to open 12 existing construction equipment locations. This took him back to his days of yore, living on the farm and working on heavy machinery–he seized the opportunity. They now have grown to 15 locations and operate as Sonsray Machinery.

Today, there are 25 Sonsray locations on the West Coast stretching from the borders of Mexico to Canada in 5 states, proudly providing customers with world-class equipment and aftermarket support. Matthew remains the sole owner of Sonsray.

In his spare time, Matt enjoys outdoor activities such as surfing, basketball, working out and spending time with his wife and family. He’s been married for over 20 years and resides in Redondo Beach, CA.
